Irish Kane McMullen

September 16, 2000 ~ July 22, 2023 (age 22) 22 Years Old

Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and indescribable sorrow that we announce the passing of our son Irish Kane McMullen on July 22, 2023. Born on September 16, 2000, Irish’s vivacious spirit captured people’s hearts from the start. At 22 years old, he left the world much too soon.

Irish is best remembered by his wit, humor, and ability to give the biggest hugs. His laughter was infectious, and he always knew how to light up a room with his larger-than-life personality. Growing up, he played a variety of sports and had a deep comradery and love for his teammates and friends. Irish always looked forward to snacks after his games and decided to stop playing sports when the moms stopped passing out food, however his relationships and love for his teammates never came to an end.

From an early age, Irish found solace and inspiration in the captivating world of films. He loved making videos and problem solving to make scenes and particular shots come together to create a work of art. Irish’s passion was evident in every project his fingers touched. He put his heart and soul into his work at the Austin Film Society.

While Irish had an enormous heart and did not hesitate to show his love to those he was close to, he internally struggled with a mental illness that took a heavy toll on him. Irish’s family and friends were a rock for him throughout his life, but he tragically decided to step away from the pain that he could not withstand any longer. It is heartbreaking to think that Irish did not feel as though he could weather any more of the heaviness that he was burdened by.

We want to clearly state that mental illness is an adversary like no other, and we want to share Irish’s story in the hopes that struggles with mental illness in society are more deeply researched with a greater understanding, more compassion, and better solutions.

Irish will always be remembered for his huge heart, vibrant spirit, and the ability to light up the room with laughter. His nickname “Lucky” could not have been more fitting as we are all extraordinarily lucky to have known him and been touched by his precious life.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all of our family and friends who have wrapped us with love and support. Your kindness and understanding have been a light in the darkness. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider this or other organizations that advocate for mental health awareness and provide resources for those in need:
